Munich’s first high-rise building
The former Technical Town Hall at Blumenstrasse 28 is Munich's first high-rise building. It was built in 1929 during the Great Depression. Its height of 45 metres does not exactly make it a skyscraper. But the red building was definitely an unmissable milestone for Munich's urban architecture at the time. The architect Hermann Leitenstorfer had deliberately decided against American proportions and stylistic elements. His design was created as a confrontation with the space available at the time and the neighbouring buildings. Leitenstorfer's "tower" - often simply called "the tower block" in Munich today - is now the headquarters of the Department of Urban Planning and Building Regulations.
