City Quarter Arnulfpark
The first section of the central railway areas along the track axis - as seen from the city centre - is occupied by the Arnulfpark urban quarter. A residential area with a total of around 1,100 flats has been built here on 27 hectares between Hackerbrücke and Donnersbergerbrücke on the former container station site. A row of office buildings facing the railway protects the residents from noise. Around 7,600 people work in the modern office blocks.
The neighbourhood's name is no coincidence: a park has been created in its centre, which serves as a play area for children and a welcome place for adults to meet and relax. At one end of the park is the historic "Freiheiz" power station, which is now used for cultural events.
In front of the Freiheitshalle is a large-scale floor relief, a work of art by Wilhelm Koch from 2007, in which the works of German director Rainer Werner Fassbinder are imprinted. The square where the mastic asphalt monument is located also bears his name.
