The newly redesigned Elisabeth Castonier Square, 2026
The neighbourhood square features shady trees, seating and fountains.
The library, which is due to open in 2023, is intended to appeal primarily to children, young people and parents.
Elisabeth-Castonier-Platz
The square is named in memory of the German writer Elisabeth Castonier (1894–1975), who died in Munich. A public workshop was held during the planning phase for the square. The aim was to explore how elements of domestic comfort could be incorporated into the public space. The result is a variety of paving, benches, plants and a fountain – all skilfully distributed across the square. The fountain, illuminated at night with a water feature and seating rim, lends Elisabeth-Castonier-Platz a special atmosphere. Conifers and deciduous trees in loose groups add variety to the area and provide shade. A wide variety of social facilities have opened around the square, enriching the neighbourhood, including the new district library.
