The “Neue Schmiede” development on Frankfurter Ring
A new neighbourhood, the ‘Neue Schmiede’, is to be developed on the industrial and commercial site at Frankfurter Ring 227, where metal parts were manufactured for 120 years. Office, commercial and hotel space providing up to 3,500 workplaces is planned across 5.6 hectares. The new neighbourhood will be dominated by a high-rise building standing just under 100 metres tall. The competition for the ‘Neue Schmiede’ neighbourhood development and the urban and open-space concept for the entire site was won by the architecture and urban planning firm UTA, Stuttgart, in collaboration with bauchplan Landscape Architects, Munich. The implementation competition for the design of the skyscraper and the neighbourhood square was awarded to robertneun Architects in collaboration with Lohrengel Landschaft, both based in Berlin
The site is currently home to the city’s largest temporary use project, ‘Marina Monaco’ – covering more than 50,000 square metres, it features, amongst other things, a mini-harbour as well as several venues offering dining, entertainment, sport and cultural activities.
