Willy-Brandt-Platz
The forecourt of the Riem Arcaden also serves as the entrance to Messestadt Riem – an area twice the size of Munich’s Marienplatz. It is bordered on three sides by the shopping centre and a hotel. Its open northern side is spanned by a 150-metre-long, 22-metre-high portico supported by slender columns. Thus, despite its considerable size, Willy-Brandt-Platz conveys a sense of enclosure. It was originally designed to give residents a great deal of freedom in how they used the space by omitting design elements. Nevertheless, there were increasing calls that the emptiness lacked vitality and a sense of community.
The City of Munich is therefore redesigning Willy-Brandt-Platz from 2026 onwards – making it climate-resilient and accessible. New trees, perennials, grasses and shrubs will be planted. The removal of hard surfaces and the introduction of greenery are also intended to reduce the area’s heat absorption in summer. The paths will be widened and fitted with accessible surfacing. New shaded seating areas and a fountain with 44 water jets will also enhance the quality of the space.
