Munich needs more, wider, and safer bike lanes, as more and more people are switching to bicycles—this is how the demands of the two 2019 citizen-initiated referendums, “Old Town Bike Ring” and “Bike Referendum,” can be summed up. The reallocation of public space to prioritize pedestrian and bicycle traffic, without restricting urban green spaces or public transit, has been approved. The first results: In 2020–2021, the first section of the 2.80-meter-wide, green-painted Old Town Bike Ring was built on Blumenstraße. The new bike lanes are flat and, as is customary in Munich, marked in red at hazardous spots. This also ensures greater safety at intersections. The sidewalks on Blumenstraße were also widened. Since then, additional sections of the Old Town Bike Ring have been added.
